Skype is a very useful tool for any foreigners and Turks also that need to phone far off distances to contact relatives or business associates but even to run a business with, this can be done.
A long time ago when skype first started out the quality was not as good but now the quality is superb with no dropouts whatsoever experienced with the latest up to date version. The Skype team are always checking for bad quality calls and if your call ever does drop out you usually are presented with a screen that asks you how the call went and on this same screen it will also ask you to mark the quality of the call from 1 to 5. They will then check these things out in the background because their priority is on improving call quality.
For those that don’t know about Skype or have never heard of it, this service uses your internet connection and a VoIP (voice over ip connection) to connect to either another person on a computer with Skype (Unlimited calls to landlines with Skype) or mobile or fixed line in any country around the world (these calls aren’t free but can seem free when using one of their monthly payment plans which allows almost unlimited talking time for very little money each month. These plans allow you to call almost all landlines for a one off inclusive charge per month as well as some mobiles for a cheaper rate than your current operator.
Since I started using Skype I have been a fan because as well as the phone service they have many add-ons like messaging voicemail and with downloadable packages you can add the ability to become a full on working online pbx system so you can transfer your calls to another skype user or phone as well as give callers options as they come through to you. Select 1 for sales, 2 for service, etc. Haven’t got a fax? You can add a service for this too! One available fax option is called Pamela fax and it is fairly straightforward to set up but you need to add credits because it isn’t inclusive to the call price plans.
You can purchase usb phones like the Belkin WiFi Phone an the Netgear WiFi Phone so that you don’t have to use a microphone and/or headphones instead. The more you make this service feel like you're using an ordinary useable house-phone the more you will get out of the service and they now even have a mobile variety of phone you attach to the pc or laptop have your skype software open and you can be mobile usually within a 100 metre radius of the house.
In my own personal opinion if you are currently using any other phone service it is worth taking a look at Skype , i feel sure that like me you will be pleasantly surprised. I still can’t believe when i am phoning a love one or friend that it is almost like the person is in the same room as me.

Happy communications.

We love Skype for keeping up with family that's far away. We've always had good success with calls into, out of, and within Turkey. BTW, great blog, thanks! I find it interesting both when I'm in Izmir and when I'm back in the US and missing my second home.
I've had Skype for several years now, and the quality has gotten better - but you'd have to have unlimited service and make constant calls to get them for 1 cent... Calls to Turkey from US run up to 21 cents/minute plus connection fee, and while quality has improved, it often is hard to understand what the other end is saying. Voicemail is a sometime thing and calling my bank in Turkey is almost impossible when it has to go thru a switchboard or auto machine. I'm not sorry I gave up my landline for Skype for everyday local calling, but most times it's better to use a Cherry phonecard on a borrowed landline if it's at all important to speak overseas. If Skype ever makes Turkish phone numbers available, things could change radically tho... at present, "free calls" are only between Skype-subscribed users on computers...
I have a full unlimited service with them and whether this is why my service has been perfect for some time now but it runs like a dream now. Admittedly, in the past is was a bit of a ropey service sometimes cutting out sometimes making you or the other party hear annoying echos of either your or the other party's voice. For me these problems have gone and i phone from Turkey to the US and the UK and in fact anywhere else without a glitch from my computer directly to a home phone. The reason your service could be running badly could be because of one of the reasons below:
1) You are using a seperate microphone and earphones - I changed to an all in one Philips skype phone and it runs like blades on ice.
2) You have a slow computer.
3) You have a slow conection - Mine is 1mbps.
4) You have not configured the service right.
5) You have not downloaded all the updates.
6) You have a adware or a virus on your machine which could be taking up your valuable bandwidth and slowing down the connection through and via skype.
Lastly, if you go through a pbx switchboard you should be able to click on one of the tabs which displays your number keypad and type in all the options required without any difficulty - I have done this without any problems to go though to a press 1 for help, press 2 for a very long wait :0) type of robotic help systems.
Isn't it strange how you seem to wait for ever on these robotic answering machines. I think the Terminator is trying out is cunning plan to get everyone in the world waiting in a phone queue and then Ha! Ha! Ha! Take over the world.
Anyway, Skype is the best thing I have come across, and much better than those cheap calling cards, typing in a 20 digit number and then a further 15 digits to get a call to your loved ones. Please! Last thing I need is painful fingers from all that typing especially when they don't connect through first time.
I'll stick with my Skype!
